Avanthi Martenstyn joins BSB Shunyi as a Secondary Biology teacher with 17 years of experience in international education. Originally from Sri Lanka, she has taught Science and Biology across Cambridge IGCSE and International A Level programmes.
She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Bangalore and an MBA from the University of Colombo. She has also completed an iPGCE through the University of Derby.
Alongside her classroom teaching, Avanthi has worked as a Head of Year. This experience strengthened her understanding of the pastoral support students need as they progress through secondary school. She places importance on knowing her students well and helping them develop confidence in their ability to succeed.
In Biology lessons, Avanthi encourages students to ask questions and think carefully about the world around them. She regularly uses student-led presentations and peer tutoring, allowing students to explain ideas, support one another and strengthen their own understanding. Around 70% of her IGCSE Biology students have attained A grades, and many have progressed to study science-related subjects at university.
Avanthi aims to make scientific ideas accessible while maintaining high expectations for every student.
Outside school, Avanthi enjoys an active lifestyle and has completed an IRONMAN. The preparation required has reinforced her belief in perseverance and steady improvement. She hopes students will recognise that demanding goals become more manageable when approached with patience and determination.
