Li Qi Ong joins BSB Shunyi as a Music teacher with experience across middle school and senior secondary education. Originally from Malaysia, she has taught in international settings that include IB programmes.
She holds a Bachelor of Music from the Australian International Conservatorium of Music and a Master of Teaching in Secondary Music from the Australian Catholic University. Both qualifications were supported by scholarships. She has also completed a jazz course with Berklee College of Music.
Li Qi spent ten years in Sydney before moving to Shanghai. She is now entering her fifth year in China and brings a strong appreciation of different musical traditions to her teaching.
Performance sits at the centre of her approach. She wants students to experience the satisfaction of preparing music for an audience and working closely with other performers. Her lessons also provide opportunities for students to compose and develop their own musical identity.
Li Qi has directed high school bands, chamber groups, choirs, musical productions and a 90-piece orchestra. One of her bands was named Most Popular Band in the Shanghai regional Battle of the Bands. Her IB Music students have achieved grades of 7 at Standard Level and 6 at Higher Level.
As an experienced Nord Anglia Education teacher, Li Qi is well versed in the Juilliard approach to teaching the performing arts. She has worked with the programme at two Nord Anglia schools in Shanghai and brings considerable experience to BSB’s collaboration with Juilliard.
At BSB Shunyi, Li Qi looks forward to building on the school’s existing music provision and creating further opportunities for students to perform. She wants students to leave her classroom with greater confidence in their abilities and a lasting connection to music.
